Clay-Dove published in 1978. firstly reveals that Sutton Parish Church registers were actually begun from 1577. Beginning the 18th century there were but ninety five families in Sutton, and a slovenly 1793 census taken by Sir Richard Sutton also probably included the 800 acres initially covering Hucknall Huthwaite. But in 1770 the Parish Clerk Thomas Dove conducted a door to door census recording ambiguously 270 families in Sutton and 80 in Huthwaite.

The parliamentary or UK national census actually started 1801, although still only gathering a simple head count.
