Hucknall-under-Huthwaite industrially emerged triangulated inland between the manufacturing city centres of Sheffield, Derby and Nottingham. Following Britains gradual rural population growth, the manufacturing of goods began feeding into and expanded our nearer market towns of Chesterfield, Alfreton and Mansfield.
Among the remoter farms first located upon these Hucknall meadows of Huthwaite, village growth long remained slow until 19th century industrial changes swept Britain. Rising population numbers sought employment massed into larger towns. From busier Nottingham some diversity in manufacturing saw a popular spread in certain textile industries. Finding increasing need to support all poorer labourers our ruling Mansfield Manor influenced introducing more Framework Knitting Machines at minimum wages.
Creating a large scale cottage industry, new factories took on full powered sweat shop production. In establishing hosiery manufacturing as our areas primary supporting industry, it took over the original farm work among Huthwaite. This page aims to index a variety of past trades and smaller industries in due course. Coal mining had long been one of them, but I must begin with the single most significant influence that undoubtedly managed to eventually built this prosperous individual mining community.
